Chapter 7

A hot tingle pricked over my skin.

The darkness around me faded, bringing to light a cavernous room of stone walls studded with jewels of every color. There was an eeriness to the place… to see something so beautiful trapped amid darkness. Was that how Persephone had felt, dragged down here, forced to live in this hellhole?

I felt like I was falling deeper and deeper, but I kept blinking to not fade away. Stumbling on my feet, I rubbed my eyes, trying to remember my last thoughts, but everything felt so blurry. The more I fought to remember recent things, the farther they slipped from my reach.

Turning around to take in the room, my gaze fell on Briar.

He stood in front of a wall made completely of skulls.

Bare-chested, he was facing me with a dirty grin, wearing only skin-tight pants that showed every curve of muscle, strong thighs, and an impressive bulge that drew my attention to his groin. Now instead of asking when he’d had time to change his clothes, all I could think was, Why couldn’t he be naked?

“You should be scared.” His words threw me off as he kept looking at me with such a lustful stare.

That was when I noticed he wasn’t wearing his face mask. His breath was poisonous, yet I remembered his mouth on mine. His full lips, slightly parted. I licked my own. His mouth curled upward and the sensual way he looked at me made the rest of the candlelight in the room seem darker. My mind turned, taking me to places I shouldn’t go.

I tingled all over with a rekindled desire. But was that what he wanted… for me to fall head-over-heels for his sexiness while he eliminated me from this game?

“You have no power over me. I survived your poison attack once already,” I stated, jutting up my chin.

“You’re so sure.”

I glared at him. “You don’t scare me.”

“Have you heard the saying, ‘You can’t outrun your shadow’?”

I scoffed. “So you’re going to stalk me, is that it? Until you win? Well—”

“Invite the shadow to your side instead of running,” he cooed, closing the distance between us in two long strides.

My heart was galloping, my gaze dipping to the hardness of his chest, the ripples of muscles, those biceps I wanted to hang on to. Except this wasn’t me. I didn’t just fall for the enemy or any pretty guy.

Blurriness swept over my mind, and I couldn’t remember where I was for a fleeting moment.

Invite the shadow… The words flashed in my mind. Was he the shadow?

He had me enthralled, captivated, and as much as my head screamed at me to walk away, I couldn’t. Not when I stared into those blue, blue, blue eyes. The depth of the ocean lay inside them, and I needed to discover their secrets.

He undressed me with that scorching gaze, and an inferno flicked its tongue between my thighs. My whole body burned up at being so close to him… to danger.

His hands moved to either side of my face in a fluid movement and he leaned closer.
